How to Apply Sunscreen
It wasn’t that long ago that I was little. Well, yes it was. There is something I remember from my teenage years that has stuck with me for a lifetime. I had a girlfriend who I hung out with all the time. We did everything together and whenever I saw her father he would shake my hand. In my hand, he would leave a gift. The gift was something that I didn’t understand the value or the worth at the time, but 24 years later I fully understand. You see in, my hand he would give me a tiny sample of sunscreen. He was, of course, a dermatologist. He told me to use it always and use it often. I never forgot that lesson.
If you fast forward to my life now, you would see on my bathroom counter sits Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face +Body Stick Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 70. I use it on my face after a wash and tone my face. It glides on nicely, and I rub it in, and then I apply my make up in the areas I need it. You would think sunscreen doesn’t make much of a difference, but you would be wrong. I am originally from Florida and when I went to my high school reunion it was evident as to who used sunscreen regularly and who didn’t. I also try to wear a hat and sit in the sun.
I want to make sure my children also develop the same habits I have for applying sunscreen. They also have a Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face +Body Stick Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 70 on their counter. They are old enough to apply it to their faces, legs, and arms. They often help one another. It is so important to be aware of the dangers surrounding not applying sunscreen. In my state of Virginia, melanoma rates have risen 35% in the last ten years. That is just awful and preventable. On average 350 American are diagnosed with skin cancer every hour.
That is why it is so important to show your children how to apply sunscreen and to model applying sunscreen yourself. I have Neutrogena spray sunscreen in the door of all of my cars. The kids know if we are going outside they need sunscreen. It doesn’t matter where we are; we always need one. I told them it is the shield like a superhero wears.
This is how you apply sunscreen:
Note you should have the right type of sunscreen for the location that you are at, if your family is going to the pool or on a boat or near water then apply Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids Sunscreen Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 70.
1) Check the expiration date on the sunscreen.
2) Apply the right amount about one ounce about the amount you can hold your hand.
3) Cover every area well do not forget about ears, head, neck, arms, legs, shoulders, back, feet.
4) Use a sunscreen that is 30 SPF or above.
5) Use a Sunscreen with a Broad Spectrum SPF like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Face +Body Stick Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 70.
6) Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure.
7) Reapply every two hours.
8) Apply right after being in the water and dry off unless you are using Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids Sunscreen Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 70.
I still believe that sunscreen after clothes is the most important thing I put on. It isn’t just for the summer, and it isn’t just for the pool. It should be part of your everyday routine, and every time you go outside. It is said that even 1 or 2 bad sunburns double your child’s risk to have skin cancer. Why take the chance? Have the Talk.
This year, Neutrogena® launched the #MimicMommy campaign for moms to use sunscreen in front of their kids to demonstrate the importance of daily sunscreen use. This campaign showcased the video “The Talk” which is a hilarious (and relatable) look at how Kristen Bell starts the conversation around this important topic and sets a sun safe example for her two kids. Watch the fun video below.
I have a request for all of you. I hope you’ll take some time to share the awesome “The Talk” video to your social media accounts because this is for a good cause. Neutrogena recently partnered with Melanoma Research Foundation. For every video share, Neutrogena® will donate $1 to the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation. It’s a non-profit, educational organization committed to preventing skin cancer through comprehensive sun safety and melanoma awareness programs.
You also all have the chance to win a Mimic Mommy Sunscreen Kit from Neutrogena! Just show us how your kids #MimicMommy in practicing sun safety by uploading a photo to social and tagging @Neutrogena and #MimicMommy with a link to the video http://bit.ly/1X0YRrF.
