Karla’s Korner: Dear Santa
Karla’s Korner: Dear Santa
Dear Santa,
As a little girl you scared me to tears. For the first few years of my little girl life I cried as my parents placed me in your lap. Sitting way up high in that big red sleigh with your bright red suit, hat and long white beard I felt small and afraid; very afraid. As I got older my fears subsided and while I wasn’t really afraid anymore your big presence was still a bit much and by the time I learned the “truth” the fairytale magic was over; our visits were over.
When I became a mother I re-visited of the Christmas magic and the idea of you while keeping true to my faith acknowledging the true meaning behind Christmas. Knowing that the fairytale magic of you would be fun while my children were small I knew that one day they too would know the “truth”; I enjoyed playing the part for as long as they believed. And just like that, it was over, my littles were bigger and our visits to you were over. Life marched on.
But now, after all these years, dear Santa, I have returned to you, the very idea of your real-ness and who you are. Your identity, I think is often complicated and at the same time simple. You see, oh jolly one, you are more than the magic fairy tale, you are more than an idea or the main character in a children’s story; you inspire the magic of Christmas.
Overhearing a young child recently proclaim “Santa isn’t real” I found myself wishing I could share with them that you are real, the very idea of you, your giving spirit, generosity and love for others is real and exists in the hearts of others. You are in the hearts of those who give of their time, talents and service to make life brighter for others. You are the fireman ringing the bell at the red kettle in the freezing cold raising money for the Salvation Army. You are the local merchant hosting a toy lift that will benefit children who would not have Christmas gifts without their help. You are the shopper who drops extra cans of food in the collection box at the grocery store. You are the parishioner who dresses up in a red suit, hat and beard passing out toys collected for underprivileged families. You are the family who instead of spending money on Christmas cards and postage stamps donates that money to missions to benefit others. You are the little children who donate their gently used coats to a coat drive for children in their community who doesn’t have a coat and without them would be cold this winter. You are the volunteers who serve meals at the soup kitchen to the homeless on Christmas morning instead of lounging around in the pajamas enjoying their new Christmas goodies.
You see, dear Santa, I believe in the magic of Christmas, the magic that comes from the idea of you and your giving spirit. I believe that you rest in the hearts of people, inspiring them to do good for others in your honor. And as the Christmas season will come in the blink of an eye, my Christmas wish is that the magic you bring will travel in our hearts throughout the New Year. So yes, I do believe in you, the Christmas spirit, the beauty of the season and most of all the beauty in the hearts of those who share their love, compassion and kindness to their world.
Merry Christmas dear Santa…I believe in you.
Peace,
Karla
