Crafting with Kids: Lacking Creativity

When it comes to doing projects with my kids there are times where I have so many ideas that I don’t know where to start. During these times I tend to write them down so I don’t forget them.

Sometimes though, I struggle to come up with new ideas. I get stuck in a rut and fall back on the easy things. Things like coloring, playdough, drawing, and painting but, those things can get boring fast for my kids. Sometimes it takes until my oldest tells me she doesn’t want to do a certain activity again to realize we have done it a lot recently. That is when I turn to my trusty resources for new ideas.

Resources

Anything can be a resource for new ideas. Here I will share a few of my favorite resources.

Online

The easiest and fastest resource to use is the good old internet. Suggestions are right at your fingertips. Simple online searches can help trigger my creativity again. I prefer to put my own spin on the projects I find but, it is perfectly fine to just follow their instructions. Your children will most likely put their own spin on it as well.

Books

If I am completely honest, this is my favorite of all the resources I use. There are so many variations of books out there, the options are almost endless. Arts and Crafts books can be found at your local library, bookstores or, even on Amazon. You can try to find books that are geared towards a specific type of project or, you can find one that has just general ideas. Another way to look for books are those that are meant for the age range of your children.

Even though I did mention the age ranges for books, don’t let the age ranges on specific projects deter you from doing them. Each project can easily be modified to be either easier or harder as needed. If you feel like your child can do a project the way it is or with a few minor changes go for it!

Other

If any of the other options haven’t jogged my memory, I take a look back at the list I made when I had an abundance of project ideas.

I  also try to think back on past projects I have done and see if maybe we could update any of them. Things like hand or foot print projects are fun to update to see how your kids have grown. Another option is to ask your child(ren) if they are able to communicate what type of project they would like to do. Often enough, they have ideas of things they would like to do or create. Those ideas may not seem like much to you but, to them, they are amazing. So, follow their lead.

All of these things are very helpful when it comes to figuring out new ideas. Be creative and have fun with it.
