The Finest Hours
At times in America history, we forget the sacrifices of individuals and look at the collective actions of the military itself. Disney’s The Finest Hours is based on the extraordinary true story of one of the greatest rescue stories ever told, it’s from the documentary Against All Odds: The Bernie Webber Story. It will inspire you with his strength, heroism, character, and accomplishment. The fabric of America is woven in the tales like this one packed with action, history, and conviction it is what makes America great.
It wasn’t that long ago that my husband fought for our freedom. It is a daily fight and one that is actionable and imperative. It isn’t only in times of war, but it is to maintain the peace we so enjoy. While my husband was embarked on missions at sea, I would sit by the ocean and wonder if it was all worth it. You know the sacrifice of his time and our time apart. The not knowing where in the world he was and the inability to communicate with him my joy or sorrow or even my daily accomplishments or struggles. I would think how do people do this? How do they put the needs of our country above their own? How do they hope, compete, and strive for America without being selfish? My husband explained his commitment to me as the single most important thing he has ever done. He told me that the single most important thing you can do is to give to and for your country. It isn’t something he can explain, the 100% commitment you make to being a part of the military, but he could tell me he wouldn’t change a minute of his service.
His service tested him like no other experience could. It made him a man. He is proud to know that his service impacted our country. I still sit on the beach and think about the men and woman who patrol the ocean above and below the surface. I think about the ability I have to move freely and the speak openly and I am thankful for the men and women whose plights sustain those that rights provided to me through the constitution.
The documentary Against All Odds: The Bernie Webber Story embodies one man’s efforts to rescue men as his duty as a servicemember in the United States Coast Guard. On Feb. 18, 1952, a massive storm splits the SS Pendleton in two, trapping more than 30 sailors inside the tanker’s sinking stern. Bernie Webber was ordered to rescue the members of the Pendleton. In the meantime, the Pendleton now broken in two was controlling its own attempt to survive until help surfaced. The lead Engineer Ray Sybert bravely takes charge to organize a strategy for his fellow survivors. The tale of both men doing what they can as part of their duty and their commitment to sustaining life was moving and riveting. It seemed with every passing wave the excitement grew and the wonder of how the impossible was possible surfaced in your thoughts.
It is these real-life tales that make our country one founded upon duty, leadership, and the bravery to do the right thing in the face of adversity a place that I referred to proudly as home. The Finest Hours is a movie that celebrates the convictions we all should strive to have but yet very few demonstrate.
The Finest Hours is available on Blu-ray™, Digital HD, & Disney Movies anywhere on May 24th. It includes bonus documentary “Against All Odds: The Bernie Webber Story.”
