Things to make bath time fun
I don’t know why I remember this, but I do. I remember the first time I gave my son a bath. I was so scared I could barely hold him. He was so little, warm, and pink. He was sweet and happy until he was unwrapped from his sleeper. His hat was removed. I kissed his sweet face as my husband attempted to warm the water. We were both unsure as to what temperature you wash a baby at.
I imagined his first bath would be much like washing a turkey. What I didn’t imagine is the turkey would scream. The turkey would wail, and my mind would turn to mush.
This was no turkey. This was our child.
I held his head and placed him in his seat in our double wide sink to the left my husband stood with the vegetable sprayer in his right hand. He had a cup in his left hand. I held his head, and with my other hand, I moved the wash cloth over his body. When the spray began, he was startled then a look of confusion and fear moved quickly across your face.
I do not know why I remember this, but I do. When all the confusion past and the water warmed your body. There was a look of pure joy that crossed your face. You smiled a genuine cheek to cheek grin. I remember singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat for no other reason then I was unsure of what else to do, and it was a song about water.
That grin melted my insecurities it brought laughter to your father. His laugh startled you, and you cried. Then we sprinkled you with more warm water and the world was right again.
Those early baths of us singing, holding you and watching you enjoy the water are some of the sweetest memories I have of you. Years later you still enjoy your bath. You play with your boats, dinosaurs, and sometimes I catch you holding your sister’s ponies and princesses.
You are now able to wash your own hair with a cup to pour the water. You have a wash cloth that you grab after each cup dump for your eyes. You laugh and make bubbles. You enjoy products like Suave’s that make bath time fun. You are now concerned with how you look and what you smell like. You enjoy doing your hair in spikes after you have washed out the piles of suds.
You take good care of yourself, and you make sure you do not smell like your older brother. You are your own person, and I will always remember your very first bath.
These are some tips I have for parents whose children aren’t as interested in baths as mine is:
1. Let them do it their self – When my daughter was 2 1/2, and refused to let me help her wash her hair. It had gotten so bad that she would throw a full-blown tantrum over it to where I would just give up. The day I asked her if she wanted to wash her hair she was so excited….Miss Independent for sure! From that day forward she has cleaned her own hair.
2. Try a shower – Before I was brave enough to let her wash it herself, I put her in the shower when it was time to wash her hair. This way she can control the water going over her head, and I can control the washing of the hair. Crazy enough it worked for a bit, but now she won’t let me get by with it anymore.
3. Opt for a bath cap – They have these cute hat type things made for the bath to keep the shampoo and water from getting into their eyes. They also have a visor one that you have to hold up when you pour the water on, but it works just as well. They both are super inexpensive and work great from what I have heard.
4. Goggles make a world of difference. We have a pair in the bath, and my daughter loves to dive for toys.
5. Have toys that are only used in the bathtub that will help to make bath time more fun.
6. Bubble bath. I know my child loves a great bath filled with bubbles. I throw in some bubble bath, and then I get her cups and bowls to make a bubble dessert for her doll.
7. Get them products that are just for them like the Star Wars or Frozen line from Suave. The Disney Star Wars™ BB-8 3-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner + Body Wash in Galactic Fresh and Disney Star Wars™ Kylo Ren 3-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner + Body Wash in Hyperspace Apple are a one bottle solution, which is a great way to save space and money. The kids love them, and I love that they can’t wait to use them.
For those of you who have little ones, I hope this helps give you some ‘cry-free’ tips on hair washing tricks and eases bath time for the future. I know mine HATES anything pouring over her face, except the shower, which was the prime cause for the fits.
