How to pick a new job

What do you do when your world turns on its ears? How do you handle a day that you thought would never come even though you knew it was coming. You knew because the evidence was there. It was right in front of you. You didn’t want to see it. You didn’t think those four words would be said. That they would be acted on. They were. They were said, stated, and emailed. Those four words changed everything.

The four words that changed everything are:

I quit my job.

Yikes, like quit? You mean you have no job? How is that possible? It isn’t, but for the first time in 20 years, my husband is happily moving on. Yes, he finally quit his job. It was a big step, and his new job is different from his previous job.

How to pick a new job

The first thing you need to do is determine what is important. We had a couple of ideas. We needed health care, so the job had to have that. The job had to be something he saw as a career. We are on the ten-year plan until he retires. I will work forever. The job has to provide the lifestyle we currently have. Yes, pay matters but not as much as it would if we hadn’t lived below our means for our entire marriage. The job would have to pay the bills and produce enough to save or have a retirement plan.The job had to provide satisfaction and make him happy or at the very least not make him unhappy. We picked the following items that were important to us.

We had these three things that had to be met in his job search.

1) Find a job doing what he likes

2) Find a job that has benefits

3) Find a job that is located near us

What?

Did you read right? Did I miss one? Did I miss the big deciding factor? You know the big one! I didn’t put pay as a determining factor. What!!! That is right my husband got to pick a job without thinking about pay. He apparently wanted to make as much as possible, but it wasn’t the deciding factor in his decision.

How is it possible don’t you people need to eat?

Yes, we eat. Yes, we have expenses, but we also have over the last two years reduced our spending to 52,000 a year. Yippeeeeee! That means the job my husband could pick didn’t have to be as high as his former salary. Oh, that number above includes saving money as well. I try to practice what I preach. I have several posts about how to live on 30,000 a year or less. I would also like to encourage you to think about what is important in life. We decided that more days off, a job that he will enjoy, and a pension was more valuable than a larger salary because we do not need the money.
