Crafting with Kids: Believe It or Not
The quickest way to get me to do something I wouldn’t typically do, is to tell me I can’t do it. I am always up for a challenge and ready to prove people wrong. My kids are the same way.
Challenging ourselves and our kids is the best way to expand our knowledge. Challenging ourselves can also helps us learn new things.
How can I challenge my kids with art?
My favorite way to challenge my kids when doing art with them, is to find projects that are just above the abilities I know my kids have.
For example: If I know my kids can cut in straight lines, I will then find something where they need to cut jagged lines.
Finding something that is way too easy for them will result in them being bored with the project.Don’t shy away from a possible project just because it seems like it may be too hard for your kids.
I have younger kids who cannot read how do we do this?
When my kids are not able to read I sit with them while they do the project and put the directions into words they will understand. Sometimes that means breaking the steps down into smaller easier steps but, they still can oftentimes do a project I thought might be too hard for them.
What if it ends up being way too hard?
If I find a project that is way beyond something I know they can do, I let them try. If it gets to a point where they are starting to get frustrated, I will step in and simplify the directions for them.
If that doesn’t work, let them be creative with the items that were needed for the original project. Give them take control and create whatever they see fit instead.
Many times both my kids surprise me, and are able to easily do something that I thought was a bit above their skill set. Even if it does take me simplifying the directions sometimes.
