Are you ready for Halloween? Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday of the year and my family and I go all out with our costumes and decorating. One of our favorite parts of our Halloween decorating is of course pumpkin carving! It’s something the whole family can enjoy together. You can go cute, classic, or creepy! I must admit, my pumpkin carving skills are pretty good, and it’s a lot easier than people make it seem I promise! I thought I would share some of my favorite pumpkin carving tips with your guys to make your pumpkins perfect for the Halloween! Let’s check them out:
Easy Pumpkin Carving Tips

Nothing says Halloween fun like scooping out a pumpkin, grabbing your carving tools, and creating a glowing jack-o’-lantern for the porch. But let’s be honest—pumpkin carving can get messy, tricky, and sometimes a little frustrating if you don’t have the right tricks up your sleeve. Don’t worry! We’ve rounded up 10 easy pumpkin carving tips that will help you (and your little ghouls) carve like pros while keeping the fun alive.
Here are some easy pumpkin carving tips that everyone can use:

1. Pick the Right Pumpkin
Choosing a good pumpkin can make all the difference in your carving adventure. You will need to make sure your pumpkin is not bruised, has a strong stem, and has a flat bottom.
Go for one that has a flat bottom so it won’t wobble around while you carve. Medium to large pumpkins work best for carving since they give you more space to create designs without collapsing.
2. Cut the Lid at an Angle
If you cut your lid strait up and down, it will fall into the pumpkin when you put it back on, and no one wants that. Make sure you cut it at an angle and leave yourself a notch.
When cutting off the top, angle your knife slightly inward. This creates a lid that won’t fall inside your pumpkin once you put the candle or light in. Bonus tip: cut from the bottom instead of the top, it makes scooping seeds easier and helps the pumpkin last longer.
3. Use an Ice Cream Scoop or Large Spoon
Make sure you scoop your pumpkin out WELL! The more you scoop out your pumpkin, the easier it will be to carve. The thicker the skin, the harder you will have to work. So spend some extra time scooping your pumpkin out and save yourself some trouble later in the process.
Forget struggling with flimsy spoons! An ice cream scoop, melon baller, or large metal spoon makes scooping out the stringy guts a breeze. Plus, the kids will love helping with this messy job.
4. Thin the Walls
Before you start carving, thin the inside walls of your pumpkin to about 1-inch thick. This makes cutting out shapes easier and reduces the chances of your knife getting stuck mid-design.
5. Sketch Before You Carve
- Google image search is your friend! If you are looking for a unique design google is your friend. Search for what you are looking for and put “coloring sheet” behind it. This will bring up a black and white easy to follow design that can be easily used as a pumpkin carving template.
Grab a marker or washable pen to draw your design directly on the pumpkin first. If you want a fancy look, print a template, tape it to the pumpkin, and poke holes along the outline with a toothpick. Instant stencil!
6. Start with Simple Shapes
If you’re carving with kids or are a beginner, stick with easy triangles, circles, or squares. These create bold, classic jack-o’-lantern faces without the stress of complicated details.
- The baby powder hack! After you have poked holes in your design and it’s time to cut, it might be a little hard to see where you are supposed to cut right? Grab some baby powder and pour it over your design. It will settle in the holes and make your design much eaiser to see.
7. Use the Right Tools
Use a carving kit! Carving kits really do make everything easier. They include the tools you need, carving templates, and they even tell you how hard something is going to be. These are perfect for the first time or beginner pumpkin carver.
Pumpkin carving kits are cheap and super effective. Those little serrated saws work way better than kitchen knives and are safer for little hands. If you don’t have one, try using cookie cutters and a rubber mallet to punch out fun shapes.
8. Add Fun Extras
Don’t stop at just carving! Give your pumpkin some googly eyes, pipe cleaner hair, or a witch’s hat for a creative twist. You can even glue on candy corn teeth for a silly grin.
9. Light It Safely
Skip real candles (especially around kids) and go for battery-operated tea lights, fairy lights, or glow sticks. They’re brighter, safer, and last longer, plus you can change the colors for extra spookiness.
10. Preserve Your Pumpkin
No one likes a shriveled, moldy jack-o’-lantern. After carving, spritz the inside and edges with a mixture of water and vinegar or rub petroleum jelly along the cut edges. This slows down rotting and keeps your pumpkin looking fresh longer.
Pumpkin carving doesn’t have to be stressful, it should be all about creativity, family fun, and a little Halloween magic. With these easy tips, you’ll have pumpkins that not only look amazing but also last long enough to impress trick-or-treaters. So grab your tools, light up those spooky grins, and let your porch glow with Halloween spirit!
Now you are ready to get your carve on! Happy Halloween!
