Crafting with Kids: Prep Early

Doing art projects with your kids can be so much fun but, they can also be pretty stressful. I love doing projects with my kids. I love being able to display them around the house and watching them rave about their creations.

For the little ones who can’t quite do everything by themselves it can be frustrating not only for them but for you as well. If they can’t do everything when they are ready to they may not be as interested in the project or, they may get antsy and upset.

Keeping it stress free

To keep it fun, it is easiest to keep stress to a minimum. In order to do that I suggest that you do any of the preparation work before you invite your child to join you. “What do you mean by preparation?”

What is preparation?

When I say preparation, I am talking about doing any of the steps that your little one cannot do on their own. This may mean cutting pieces out or laying the items that are needed within reach for your child. It can also include covering the work space with a plastic table cloth for easy clean up (we get the $1 table clothes at the dollar store).

When do I find the time?

It is easiest to do the preparation when your child is distracted or, even better, sleeping. I tended to use naptime to get these things done. If your child doesn’t nap or, you prefer not to use the quiet time to do these things, you can easily do it while they are playing.
