Crafting with Kids: Why Waste a Baking Fail?

Crafting with Kids

I have had my fair share of baking fails. If I’m totally honest, it happens quite a lot. But, Who hasn’t? I’d like to believe that even the best of bakers end up failing at some point. Or, maybe I just say that to make myself feel better. Either way, I feel like I have had enough baking mishaps for you and me both.

I’d like to believe that this is the case because my oven was broke and not cooking correctly but, who knows.

Instead of completely wasting my baking fails, I have decided to turn my mishaps into sensory projects.

Why sensory projects?

Sensory projects help your kids learn through exploration and play. By actively using their senses your kids take in so much more information then if they were to just look at or read something.

How do you do it?

Our latest mishap were sugar cookies. For some reason, the bottoms burned and the middles of the cookies were, um, partially cooked.

Instead of just tossing them in the garbage I put them in a shallow container and let my kids play with them. I let them squish them and crumble them as much as they wanted.

Cautionary Things

For something like this, where the middles aren’t quite cooked all the way, I recommend that you not do this with kids who may try to eat them. My kids are 2 and 7 and no longer put things in their mouths. We just made sure that our hands were washed thoroughly when they were done playing.
