This year we are talking about how to save money. I have to say that as soon as my children got out of diapers I had a huge boost in my income. I figured out several creative ways to potty train, and I was able to potty train my children pretty quickly although I will say my first one was the hardest. The rest watched their big brother which confused my daughter who thought she could stand and aim. That was a mess I will never forget. I am sure we all have those moments. I look back at all the money we spent on diapers, wipes, and bribery and realized there was a better way to do all of that. These are my secrets that have been tried and tested and stamped with the approval of three fully potty trained kids later.

Budget friendly potty training ideas

2) Then we went and picked up big girl or boys panties.

3) Then we go a baby doll that pees.

4) Get a timer or use your microwave, cellphone, or computer.

5) Print out these duck feet.

6) Print out this duck twice.

7) Print out these feathers twice or more.

8) Get a jar for the Piyo Piyo food (Duck food).

9) Print out these labels for the Piyo Piyo treat jar.

10) Put your child’s name on the label for the jar.

Creative ways to potty train

I bet you are wondering what to do with the items you printed out. The potty chart goes on the wall or door of the bathroom that you think you will be in most. We put a nail in the wall and used a clipboard so the potty sheet can travel. I put mine in a sheet protector, so I could place the pen in there as well. If you do that, you can all have the feathers in the sheet protector. Then put the duck head on the wall. I used painters tape to do this since it sticks to the wall but not to the paint. Then I could easily add feathers and take them down each week or day. The feet that you will print are used to show where the potty is, so print out as many as you need showing the path to the potty. Then teach your child how to follow the feet to the potty. We made a game of it. I would change the direction of the feet but still get them to the potty. That helped the children remember where they were going. It was also something fun; you could add if they potty in the potty then they get to move the feet. You can slowly remove the feet as they become more proficient with potty training.

Easy potty training ideas

I found the easiest way to train my children to go potty in the potty was to not train them. I trained the doll. We fed the doll together. Then we set the timer for 15 minutes. When the timer went off the doll went to the potty. If the doll went potty, they received a check in the potty chart. The Piyo Piyo duck received a feather. When the Piyo Piyo duck received so many feathers, the child receives duck food. (Ducks love fish crackers). When you are potty training, you want to reward everything that happens on the potty even if it is a drop. You will first reward the doll, and the doll will pretend to eat. Then as your child sits on the potty and something comes out you will give them the feather to add to their duck, and they get a treat. When you go potty, you will also get a treat from the duck jar. We all know they follow us in there anyway so go ahead and make it a teachable moment!

There are other budget-friendly potty training ideas like partnering their favorite activity with the potty. I always kept books and toys in the potty. I made sure that if they tried at the beginning, they got a lesser treat usually praise or a kiss. I found with my daughter she like getting lipgloss on in the mirror while on the potty. The boys liked me reading to them. If they were on the potty, I was on the step stool reading. I would keep the kids in underwear while I was at home and I would put my timer on every 15 minutes, and I would make them drink after drink. Then once I learned their cycle I would move back the clock to reflect that like going every 20 minutes, 25, 30, 35, until they were asking to go on their own. I called it the potty tinkle. Are you getting the potty tinkle? I would try to stay consistent with your word choice, praise, rewards. The best way to train your child is to be consistent and to be positive and have the right tools available to help them be successful.
