I will be the first to admit, spiders scare the crap out of me! But I have always been one of those people that wants to know all about what I am afraid of. That was my fear is justified! So when I was approached to do a fun bug themed (or in my case, arachnid themed) project for Orkin, I knew I had to jump in and do it! We all know that Orkin is the leader when it comes to pest control, and they know that all pests in the world have their place, just not in your home!  I am always looks for a fun way to educate my 5 year old on all types of subjects, and that includes spiders, and what to look out for! Orkin has a great new website called Orkin Ecologist which is your one stop shop for all information about things that creep and crawl! Me and my little one sat down and learned all about different types of creepy crawly’s and thought about a project we could do.

We knew we wanted to do something with spiders, and Jaiden (my little one) asked if people knew what kind of spiders would hurt them. We decided to focus on deadly spiders in the US. We thought there was no better way to highlight spiders, than with a spider “web of facts”. We wanted to put a Halloween twist on this project, so we knew we had to carve a pumpkin spider for the giant web!

This project is easy (and fun!) to do, and only takes a few steps!

Step 1: First, you have to find your facts! We used a great article on the Orkin Ecologist Website that highlighted the venomous spiders in the US. For example, Did you know that out of over 3,000 species of spiders in the US, only 2 are considered deadly? Yep, just the Black Widows, and the Brown Recluses could so some serious damage. Once you pick out your facts, print them out.

Step 2: Time for some pumpkin carving! I found a free template online (I did a Google search) for a spider pattern. This was Jaiden’s favorite part of the project, because who doesn’t love carving pumpkins right? (If you have little one’s like mine, make sure you are there to supervise so no one gets hurt!)

Fun Fact: Look who decided to join us while carving! We knew from our research that that was not a deadly spider, so we let him hang out with us.

Step 3: To make the “web” we used a black poster board and some white yarn. Start by making a “star” shape around the board and glue the pieces down. Then go around the star shape in a circle until your web forms!

Step 4: Glue your facts to the board and display it with your carved spiders!

This would be a great project to set out during Halloween so your trick-or-treaters can get some treats AND knowledge!
