Make Your Own Natural Lotion
So you just exfoliated and want to rehydrate your skin, so of course you’re going to reach over and grab your $10 bottle of lotion that contains alcohol! Uhmm hello?! You just exfoliated your skin, do you really want to dry it out? I didn’t think so either! So let’s do us both a favor, put that bottle down and go into your kitchen. I have a few things you need to grab so that you can make your own lotion. If you want to know the cost, you’ll be able to make 10 8oz bottles for $2 each as the final price!
Ingredients:
? 1 cup apricot kernel oil or olive oil
? ¼ cup coconut oil
? ¼ cup beeswax
? ¼ cup water
? Essential oil of your choice
? Vegetable base color (optional)
? Saucepan
? Stove
? PET lotion bottle
Instructions:
1 Place the saucepan on your stove and turn it on to low.
2 Add the apricot kernel oil and coconut oil in the saucepan and heat gently. You can use sweet almond oil, safflower or even canola oil. The Coconut oil can be replaced by cocoa butter. As you can see there are many other alternatives, and none will change the end result.
3 Chop or grat the beeswax chunk.
4 Put the beeswax into the saucepan with the oils. Stir gently over the low heat until the beeswax is completely melted. The wax will help your homemade body lotion hold together and provide more soothing for your skin. Beeswax is a natural skin hydrant.
5 Remove the mixture from the heat and pour them into a smooth-sided bowl.
6 Add the water while you stir to combine You can also use an electric mixer on low to whip the lotion together. (I usually do it this way, and it’s pretty cool to see it happen too. The amount of water you use will depend on how thick and creamy you want the lotion. A lightweight, everyday lotion will have more water. Use less water for a thicker more
therapeutic treatment.
7 Now this is where it gets fun! Add 3 or 4 drops of your favorite essential oil to scent the lotion. Use any scent you like for your lotion, or match the scents with aromatherapy ideas: citrus for energy, lavender for calming and eucalyptus for clarifying. Stir the essential oil in until totally combined.
8 Add the vegetable-based food coloring if desired. A few drops at a time until you achieve your desired color. Doing this doesn’t affect how your lotion works. It just helps it look pretty, or if you make various different kinds, it helps keep them in order. For example if you make lavender dye the lotion purple. If you use chamomile, dye it yellow, etc.
9 Pour the lotion into your bottle, use a funnel if necessary. Homemade lotion without preservatives can last several months in a cool place.
**Did you know that you can make your own essential oils? Take whatever herbs, flowers, or fruit peels and steep them in any oil you choose for about a month. Then drain the oil using a cheese or muslin cloth. Pour the oil into a mason jar and store.**
