Homemade Swedish Meatballs Recipe

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil for frying

Instructions

1. Make the Meatball Mixture

In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 2–3 minutes.

In a large bowl, mix:

ground beef
ground pork
onion
garlic
soaked breadcrumbs
egg
salt
pepper
nutmeg
allspice
parsley

Mix gently until combined.

2. Shape the Meatballs

Roll into small meatballs, about 1 tablespoon each.

3. Cook the Meatballs

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook meatballs in batches for about 7–9 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and fully cooked.

Transfer to a plate.

Easy Creamy Gravy Recipe

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to Make the Gravy

In the same skillet, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.

Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking. Add cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard.

Simmer until thick and creamy.

You can use this gravy for instant pot or if you want to use the skillet then just return meatballs to the skillet and simmer for another 5 minutes so they soak up all that delicious sauce.

Serve warm with:

  • creamy mashed potatoes
  • buttered egg noodles
  • roasted vegetables
  • lingonberry jam for a sweet-tart contrast

Helpful Tips

  • A mix of beef and pork gives the best flavor and texture.
  • Don’t overmix the meat or the meatballs can turn dense.
  • If the sauce gets too thick, add a splash of broth.
  • These freeze beautifully for easy weeknight meals.
