Free Summer Activities for Kids: Flying Kites!
Free Summer Activities for Kids – Flying Kites!
Need ideas for free summer activities for kids? Follow my family as we explore some of the free (or almost free) things to do this summer.
As I mentioned in my last post, I live just a few miles from St. Augustine, also known as the “Nation’s Oldest City.” One of the most beloved spots in St. Augustine for both locals and tourists alike is the Castillo de San Marcos, commonly referred to as “The Fort.” This National Monument includes 20.5 acres and is the oldest masonry and only surviving 17th century fort in North America. It includes a 40-foot moat and double drawbridge, and the walls are uniquely constructed from coquina, a limestone formed from compacted shells and coral. For a great and inexpensive history lesson, you should definitely explore the fort – it’s free for kids and $7 for adults. You’ll see re-enactors, weapons demonstrations, and exhibits about colonial life.
But in my opinion, the best part of the fort is the green surrounding its exterior, which is open and free to the public. From the outer walls of the fort, you can see a spectacular view of St. Augustine and the Matanzas River. It’s a popular picnic spot, and on any given day you may see sunbathing tourists, dog-walking locals, and even the occasional wedding. We’ve enjoyed many family picnics here, and many years ago it was even the spot of one of my very first dates with my husband.
And our new favorite activity to do there is flying kites! A couple of months ago, my husband spotted a beautiful, well-made unicorn kite at Sam’s Club for only $8! My girls absolutely love unicorns and couldn’t wait to fly their new kite. The Castillo de San Marcos is an ideal spot for kite flying – it’s a great, wide open space, and the high walls and adjacent river almost guarantee windy conditions. We’ve been out there to fly our kite several times now, and my girls are getting quite good at it. And my husband recently picked up two more sturdy kites from Sam’s Club – this time on sale for $5 each.
For only $8, we are able to enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous view – and create priceless family memories!
