College Dorm Bedding

So, you’re heading off to college! Between the thrill of newfound freedom and the slight horror of sharing a bathroom with 15 strangers, one thing often gets overlooked: your bed.

Yes, the twin XL slab of plastic foam provided by your dorm is technically a bed, but let’s be honest, it needs help. Major help. Let’s break down how to turn that glorified yoga mat into the cozy, personality-packed throne of dreams you deserve.

Guide to College Dorm Bedding

1. The Great Twin XL Mystery
Repeat after us: twin XL. Not twin. Not full. Not queen. TWIN. EXTRA. LONG. That extra 5 inches makes all the difference and no, your little sister’s pink polka dot sheets won’t fit. Buy at least two sets of twin XL sheets so you’re not stuck waiting on laundry day with nothing but a towel.

Tip: microfiber is soft, easy to wash, and budget-friendly. But if you’re fancy and like the feel of hotel sheets, splurge on cotton or bamboo blends.

2. Mattress Toppers = Lifesavers
Dorm mattresses are harder than Calculus II. You’ll want a mattress topper, foam, egg crate, memory foam, or even one of those plush featherbeds if you’re feeling extra. This is a must for comfort and helps you actually sleep after all those late-night cramming sessions (or karaoke parties in the hallway).

3. Duvet or Comforter? Whatever Feels Like a Hug
Whether you’re a duvet devotee or a comforter connoisseur, make sure it feels like a hug from your favorite person. Bonus points if it’s reversible, so you can flip it when your mood—or your roommate’s mood lighting changes.

Tip: Look for bold colors, cool patterns, or cozy neutrals to express your style. (Psst… the bed takes up most of your room, so it basically is your decor.)

4. Pillows: The More, the Merrier
One for sleeping. One for propping up. One for crying on after midterms. Maybe a few decorative ones to really show you’ve got your life together (even if you don’t). Throw in a body pillow if you’re dramatic or just love a good snuggle. Pillows = instant cozy.

5. Blankets Are Like Emotional Support Snacks
Have at least one throw blanket that feels like heaven. Great for chilly study sessions, movie nights, or sudden naps between classes. (Also handy for dragging yourself out of bed without actually getting out of bed.)

6. Underbed Storage = Bedding Backup Plan
Toss an extra set of sheets or a backup blanket in a bin under your bed. Future-you will thank present-you when your roommate’s laundry day overlaps with your coffee spill disaster.

Don’t wait until move-in day to open and wash your bedding. Those sheets come out of the package stiffer than your college orientation leader. Give everything a good wash so it’s soft, smells nice, and is ready to go. (Plus, who has time to figure out laundry machines on Day 1?)
