Crafting with Kids: Vacation

While vacations are great, they can also be stressful for both kids and adults a like. Even if your little ones aren’t stressed out but, you are, they can tell. It doesn’t matter the reason causing the stress, if they can sense that you are stressed out, they too will become stressed out. Which typically doesn’t help the “relaxed” feeling vacation is supposed to bring.

How can we minimize vacation stress?

One of the biggest ways to minimize vacation stress, is to do your best to keep to your routine. You and your kids will appreciate this. For example: if you typically do art after nap time, than continue doing that while on vacation.

How do I continue art while on Vacation?

Just keep up with your normal routine as far as art time goes. Try to keep the timing about the same as well.

What should I take with?

There is no reason to take all of your crafting supplies with you on vacation. That would be crazy.

All I suggest that you bring are: a handful of construction paper, a glue stick, markers or crayons, and a few pieces of white paper (or a sketch pad). If you are feeling adventurous, take along some of the small finger paints (this is one of our favorite sets). I suggest putting in a ziplock for transportation (better safe than sorry). You can bring a whole set of paints or, just a few. Either way, it is another option for your child to be able to create something.

I also suggest that if possible these items have their own backpack or small bag so they are easy to transport and find. Nothing is worse than knowing you brought something with you but not being able to find it because you don’t know which suitcase it ended up in.

Keep it Simple

There is no need to go over the top with art projects while on vacation. This is just simply to keep your child’s routine.

What types of art projects should we do?

This depends on your child’s age.

Our favorite things to do on vacation are to use a sketch pad and have our kids draw something from the day and color it (or paint it). The beauty of this is each child can interpret it they way they want to. They don’t need to be able to draw full pictures for this to be done.

Another project we do is use what is around us and paint with it. Check out the directions here.

What to do with the art projects you did

You can take them home and punch them with a 3 hole punch. Tie them with a ribbon and you created a memory book that was illustrated by your child.

You can also have your kids create a photo book with pictures from the trip. Check it out here.
