Michigan Vacation Trip Ideas- Michigan Science Center

Look no further than the Michigan Science Center for Michigan Vacation Ideas

No matter if you are looking for Staycation or Vacation ideas, make sure that the Michigan Science Center is on top of your list. The  Science Center is in the same location that the Detroit Science Center was located.  The Detroit Science Center closed in September 2011 but reopened under new owners and financing in December 2012. The name was changed and it operates under the Michigan Science Center. The Michigan Science Center offers traveling exhibits, Imax Dome Theatre, Planetarium, Live Shows and Demonstrations and over 200 hands on exhibits.

We visited the Michigan Science Center for the first time on Sunday. This was a “Staycastion”to celebrate everything we love in a Michigan Vacation. We didn’t have any set plans and just wanted to explore the Science Center for what it had to offer. We arrived just in time to take in the “Tornado Alley” show at the Imax Dome Theatre. This was just one of several films available thru out the day in the Imax Dome. (Additional Cost on top of Admission).

We spent the next several hours taking in the exhibits such. We enjoyed the aeronautics in the Space area. My kids pretended to be “Couch Potatoes” in the Health and Nutrition area.  Explored the laws of motion, learned about being green and marveled at the engineering required to build a model of the Mackinaw Bridge. Hint-it took them 5 years to build it.

We even took the few shows offered at the Toyota Engineering 4D Theater where we learned about the different types of engineering. I even learned that there is a Rafting Waterpark. At the Chrysler Science Stage we learned about digestion and the different areas of the brain. Presented in a way that children could understand and with a hint of humor. We watched Igor demonstrate how he got his body and brain in better shape. The  DTE Energy Sparks Theater provided shocking results and many laughs as the audience was “attracted” to the effects of magnetic energy and static electricity.

My kids loved the hands on activity that they were able to experience in the “Manufacturing” Exhibit. My son even tried the Hi-Lo on for size.  I am thankful there were no keys because he would have driven it if he had the chance.

We left with the last of the crowd when the Science Center closed. We have already scheduled our next visit on the calendar for when the newest Traveling Exhibit starts. Starting June 20th – January 2, 2014, you can experience the Science of Rock N Roll.

Check out the Michigan Science Center as your stop during your Michigan Vacation!
