How to Make a Pizza Garden
Build a Pizza Garden for less money and in less time than delivery.
Recently I had a brilliant idea! If I want my kids to eat what we grow, I have to grow with they want to eat first. What do most kids want to eat? Pizza! I will make a pizza garden. So it was off to the hardware store I went. Thankfully, I was able to find exactly what I needed very quickly. I grabbed four of these cinderblock bricks and one piece of 2x6x12 untreated pine (cedar also works). They cut them into four 3 foot pieces in most stores too. The wood was less than $6 total and the bricks were about $2.50 each. The grand total for a raised garden bed- $16.00!
Green Thumb Challenged
I wrote a post a few weeks ago about how to start a garden and was very honest that I am “Green Thumb challenged”. I always have the best intentions when it comes to starting a garden. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always work out as planned and there are days when I don’t get five minutes to brush my hair, much less water and tend a garden. I am also stuck on the idea that somehow growing vegetables will mean that my kids are more likely to eat them. You know, take pride in their (my) hard work? I have not found that to be the case, but Lord knows I’ll keep trying!
If you followed along with my how to start a garden, then you know that this price point was right up my alley. Also, the way the bricks are set up you can always add onto them. This is a totally customizable set up. What do your kids like on pizza? Mine chose: Red Peppers, Basil, Roma Tomatoes, Rosemary (what?! Weird children!), Spinach, and Lettuce (again, what??). We also brought a hanging Cherry Tomato plant to make sun dried tomatoes with. Thinking ahead to next year, a broader pepper variety and some squash or zucchini would make a fun addition. Maybe even something wacky like potatoes would be great to try!
For under $30 in materials, seeds, dirt, and less then an hour of set up, you really can’t beat this fun way to introduce gardening and vegetables to your kids. I can almost guarantee they will be the only ones in their class with their very own Pizza Garden!
