Karla’s Korner: Finding Ourselves in the Quiet
Finding Ourselves in the Quiet….
Sitting in my quiet spot, the corner where I allow my thoughts to flow through my head and heart like a creek flowing through the mossy floor of the forest I find myself inhaling a bit deeper embracing fact that I am alone on Easter morning. The circumstances of my personal life lately have not been what I would have ever imagined but none the less it’s mine and I must own it. One of the most welcome yet difficult parts of each day is the quiet time, that time where reality resonates and causes me to think, to sort through the options or opportunities that lay in front of me; making decisions is tough. As much as I wish sometimes the quiet time would disappear, I realize that it’s in that quiet time that I can listen to my heart, feel my soul and meditate, pray and focus on what it is I need to do but what happens when the words elude me? Where do I go to find the words I need to explain my heart when I just can’t find them? It is in my quiet spot, the corner where I allow my thoughts to flow through my head and heart like a creek flowing through the mossy floor of the forest that I realize it is okay that I don’t have the right words right now. Being quiet and still is all I can manage at this time and that is just okay. In time the rights words will appear in my mind and heart but for now it is the quiet stillness in my corner that I breathe in and breathe out; it’s all I can do and that is just okay.
A lover of words I find myself scouring books, blogs and sometimes bathroom walls for quotes or thoughts that when strung together often trigger an idea or notion that helps with clarity of the mixed up mess in the world around me. Taken from a recent social media post from “Positive Outlooks” I find the following words written by someone I consider unknown (as I don’t know her,) Kamla Bolanos, to be profound and perfectly fitting for those days when words elude me: “Please be patient with me. Sometimes I’m quiet, it’s because I need to figure myself out. It’s not because I don’t want to talk. Sometimes there are no words for my thoughts. “ For those who know me it is often difficult to believe that words elude me, but sometimes I believe that we are not supposed have the right words. It is at those times I think we are supposed to sit back, be still and embrace the quiet; we need to take time to determine how we feel and to figure ourselves out. Often we need the quiet, the stillness to allow the ears of our heart to hear what’s important.
Taking time to be still may not seem possible but even a few stolen minutes somewhere during your day will allow you to re-focus your mind and your heart. It is, however important, necessary even that we remind those around us that we need our space, our quiet time because without it our minds and hearts remain on life overload causing us to crash and burn leaving behind charred remnants of who we are or who we should be. Everyone I think deserves quiet time. Setting aside time for ourselves allows us to escape from routine and responsibilities and communicate with ourselves. Being mindful of our own wants and needs is not selfish rather necessary in order to be our best for those in our world.
As you go about the coming week I encourage you to purposely carve out quiet time to communicate with yourself; making sure those in your world know and understand your need to be alone. Realizing that figuring out who we are, what we want in this one life we have to live may change with time. Someone recently told me I wasn’t the same person they met nearly 30 years ago. My answer: “I’m not. I am nowhere near that girl and if I was it would be a shame.” You see in order for us to be who we are supposed to be we must continually work toward that and often that work requires stillness and an understanding from those around us that we need time and that sometimes we just don’t have the words to express ourselves; and that’s okay.
Singer Mandy Hale wrote “Some steps need to be taken alone. It’s the only way to really figure out where you need to be.” Make the decision to take a few steps alone. Embrace the down time, the quiet time that will allow you to reflect and find out who you are and where it is you want to go on your life journey; and then continue on in that journey with confidence and purpose. It’s your life. Go live it.
Peace,
Karla
