Karla’s Korner: Hum a Little
Karla’s Korner: Hum a Little
Hum a little…..
She stands a little over five feet tall, has long dark hair flowing down her petite shoulders, wears glasses and is humming every time I see her. I don’t know her name but every time I shop at the local K-Mart I find myself trying to get in her checkout lane. Like most folks I find holiday shopping exhausting. The crowds of people pushing and shoving their way through stores searching for the “perfect” gift takes a toll on me. I’m not a fan of shopping to begin with and when I have to do it I strive to get in and get done as quickly as possible. As I stand in her checkout line I find myself smiling because in all of the chaos of the day she manages to smile and hum as she assists each shopper with their purchase. On this particular day I have a sizeable pile of stuff on the belt and like always she is humming away. At the end of the transaction I swipe my debit card and ask her to check my rewards card for any credits I may have. Without warning she claps her hands and in her best broken English (she has an Asian accent) she says “how wonderful you have $9.30 credits!” She was truly excited for me that I was saving a few dollars on my purchase. Her job would remain the same for the remainder of the day, nothing I’m sure was going to be any different and yet she found great joy in my $9.30 reward.
American science fiction author Robert Heinlein once wrote “One of the sanest, surest, and most generous joys of life comes from being happy over the good fortune of others.” How often are we truly happy for someone else’s good fortune? How often do we find ourselves truly happy because someone else has had something wonderful happen in their life? How often can we say that we are not jealous of someone else who got a pay raise at work, bought a new car, won the lottery, got engaged, is pregnant, had a baby or some other good fortune or blessing in their lives while we wait for the same thing? At some point in our lives we all find ourselves a bit jealous of someone else. I’m going to step out on the proverbial limb and say that it’s normal to be jealous, however, I believe it is not a good normal.
Much like the little lady at K-Mart, we should strive to embrace each day, no matter the circumstance, with a positive attitude; hum a little. With her smile and sweet melodic humming she takes what some would consider a menial job and makes the best of it. She greets everyone with the same sweet smile and spreads her cheer to everyone that comes through her line. What would it be like if we were all a bit more cheerful? How much better would our days be if we chose to smile more, hum a bit more, and share a positive gracious attitude to those we come in contact with? There’s a deep sense of connection with someone when they smile at you; a smile lightens even the dreariest of moods. Opening yourself up to sharing more with others will allow others to be more positive with you creating somewhat of a “ripple” effect.
As you go about your week I encourage you to make it a point to hum a little, share a smile with those you meet and see what kind of effect it has on others and yourself. After all turning your frown upside down will improve your “face value”. Be well. Be prosperous. Be happy.
Peace,
Karla
I think we all need a touch point a place we can go to be inspired. Karla is my children’s teacher, a good friend, and a person with a heart of gold.
