Mexican Recipes Kids Can Make: Homemade Taco Seasoning

My family loves Taco Night! It’s quick, easy, and one of the few meals that all four of us can agree on. I try to always keep our pantry and fridge stocked with taco supplies for whenever I need a throw-together meal.

One evening, I was all set to make tacos and realized that I didn’t have any taco seasoning. It occurred to me that I probably already had everything I needed to make homemade taco seasoning in my spice rack. So I hopped online and found out what spices are usually included in pre-packaged taco seasoning mix. I had them all – I combined them and it turned out great! Here’s the mix that my family likes. You can adjust it to suit your own tastes. My kids like their foods a bit spicy – if yours have more sensitive palates, you may want to cut back on the chili powder and red pepper.

Your homemade taco seasoning will be ready to go in just minutes! Once the meat for your tacos is browned or fully cooked, add the seasoning directly to the meat. I like to start with 2 teaspoons and then add more to taste. Slowly add water to the pan and bring the meat to a simmer until it’s saucy and seasoned just the way you like it!

My kids love to help by measuring and stirring the spices. It’s a great sensory activity, too – you can let your kids smell, taste, and feel the different textures of each spice. I like to double this recipe so that I always have some on hand – just be sure to store it in an airtight container.
