How to Lower Energy Bills

Life is expensive. Prices have gone up on everything from clothes, to groceries, to gas prices. There are many things we try to find deals on or coupons for but, for things like household utilities you just accept the price we are billed and payout. I have good news: you don’t have to. There are few things you can do to lower your energy bills.

How to Lower Energy Bills

1. The easiest thing to do is to set your thermostat back. Whether that is turning the heat down or air condition up (even just a few degrees). Doing this will help you save a decent amount on your energy bill. Even if that is just setting it back when you and your family are out of the house. Just those few hours will add up.

2. Check the insulation (especially in the attic). Adding insulation can help keep the cost down in both winter and summer. Typically, there is around three inches of insulation in the attic. If you add to that, you will cut your heating and cooling bills. If making the insulation as thick as 12 inches is a possibility that will make the most impact.

3. Checking around the doors and windows for leaky areas will help too. By simply adding some weatherstripping or caulk around the edges where it needs to be filled will help stop (or at least minimize) those leaks also helping to lower the electricity bill.

4. There are a couple areas in the home that are easily forgotten about. The first being the Light bulbs. Switching from regular bulbs to energy star certified LED bulbs will help cut the costs as well. Next, changing your shower head to a water saving one. Using less water doesn’t mean less pressure so, take a minute to take a look at your current shower head.

5. Checking the furnace filter is something we are all supposed to do every few months but, it is something that is easily overlooked (or forgotten) when it comes to lowering the energy bills. Not only will it help lower the utility bill but, by keeping on top of changing the filter you will extend the life of your furnace.

6. There are many things you can do in the kitchen that can help you save on the utility bills as well. The first thing to consider is how old the appliances are. If the appliances are older, looking into new ones would be something to consider. Next, try using smaller kitchen appliances. Using a crock pot uses less energy than using the whole oven. Also, if you leave on vacation; let your appliances have a vacation as well. Turn the thermostat way down, and unplug everything that doesn’t need to be running while you are gone.

7. Another way to lower the utility bill is to have your usage evaluated. You can do this by contacting the utility company and requesting an energy assessment. Although it can possibly cost out of pocket, in the long run, it will help you save money on future bills.

In some areas, there are two or more companies that can provide utility services to your house. If this is the case, take the time to call the other companies and compare prices. This is not an option for everyone but, if it is it can be worth checking out as well.

Putting even some of these tips to use will help lower your bill. Every little bit will help.
